I just wanted to report that the song titles are displaying on the latest versions of your MacOS and Windows software. However, they are not showing on the iOS nor the iPadOS version. I do have the song title toggle on as well. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!!!
It sounds stupid, but can I just verify that the mobile apps were updated? (just in case automatic updates were disabled).
Also the mobile app itself needs to have the song title toggle on (well it won't be there if not updated), rather than just the desktop version.
If all is set properly try if logging out of and back into Dropbox helps.
Thank you for the prompt reply Marc, and yes, both my iPad and iPhone have the latest version of TheocBase. I did try to log out of Dropbox on my iPad and log back in, however it did not work. The nuclear option would be deleting the cloud data and then synchronizing but I didn't want to try that just yet.
If not all brothers have the latest version of TheocBase would that cause it not to work?
No, not for now...
I was told that probably song titles are not synced properly (which would mean they do not get transported into your mobile device)
So I copy paste what I got (in this case you will have to unzip the attachment first, it will give you a small txt file):
Thank you Marc,
Unfortunately I have no way to unzip the file on my Mac. I double clicked on the file, and nothing was in it. Here are a couple of things that I would really appreciate though:
1. Would you please give me step by step instructions as to how I can import the songs into TheocBase appropriately? So for instance, if I need to create a spreadsheet of the songs, please tell me what format I need to save it in, and what Program or App I need to use. I have Excel, Word, Numbers, and Pages at my disposal.
2. TheocBase is a very useful tool with one glaring problem, it doesn't come with any instructions. When the developers add features, it would be great if they told us how to implement them so we didn't have to go into the Database every time and delete all the things we did wrong. I have three brothers, two of which are not tech savvy at all, that I am going to have try and have them find their Database, delete it, and then replace it with my updated one. It took three hours or more for me just to help them get TheocBase working correctly on their computers in the first place because at times, some brothers do not know how to be patient and wait for instruction, or to listen to the instructions given. If the developers were to make a document outlining how to do things, it would be amazing! Most every thing you purchase, no matter how simple it is, comes with a manual. TheocBase is anything but simple. Also, some of the "features" do not work as described. For instance, you can't use TheocBase's backup feature because it does not work appropriately, you have to manually backup your Database after any changes. Also, if you delete something in TheocBase it isn't gone, it's still in the Database. You have to download another Program or App to make changes to the Database for them to take effect. If a Template has an error, then you have to download yet another Program or App to fix it. Having a manual explaining these things would be incredibly helpful.
Please understand that I do not mean this as harsh as it is coming across. I am frustrated I will admit, but not nearly as much as it sounds, and for that I am very sorry. I just do not have endless time, and TheocBase has taken countless hours of my time because it comes with absolutely no instructions whatsoever, and I have had to teach myself how to use it, and rely on this Support Forum, which I do appreciate greatly do not get me wrong. If TheocBase came with instructions though, brothers would probably not have to utilize this Support Forum nearly as much.
Thank you so much for all the help you have provided me with Marc, I really do appreciate it. I am sorry again if I have come across in an unkind way, that is not my intent.
Ohw, that is a long story. Yes, I can see it is frustrating. No problem.
The txt. I am really surprised Mac cannot unzip a file. Mac is not stupid... Thing is I cannot attach a txt file here on the forum, but do this: Create a .txt file and paste the following line it.
UPDATE song SET time_stamp = strftime('%s','now')
Close and save, and then run according to what was said previously.
As for importing the songs. I have no problem telling you, but I don't think they aren't imported incorrectly, if they were they wouldn't show up in your desktop.
Now here we come to a tricky thing: we have had this with public talk titles, Theocratic School lessons (when we had those) and all sorts of other stuff: they were and are (!) not always published consistently between languages. Then it is better to give just general directions (implied by the TB user interface) than instructions. But here is how I do it and you do not need anything else than internet and TheocBase.
This wouldn't work 100% with e.g. French, since they use : rather than . and you would have to filter those out. Individually remove them from TB after import, of paste in txt file, open txt file with Excel and use Excel skills to remove them before. As an example how there is no 'one method fits all'....
There is a Help file with a lot of useful info, but Yes I know it may not be complete. And about setting up Dropbox, there is more info on the theocbase.net website under Documentation.
The Help file is not something that is being developed very strongly. Most requests from users are about added features and the developers (I know nothing about writing software..) will have to prioritise. And then there is the changes in the meeting format which happen sometimes and that the Governing Body do not discuss with TheocBase beforehand (;-D). When that happens everything has to be dropped.
With the help-file there is the additional problem that translation of TB depends on an external group of voluteers. If they do not pick it up when notified, those languages are stuck with English, which may be a problem for some users.
I understand what you are saying; everything you buy comes with a manual. In my opinion it is the worst illustration that we use at the door about reading the Bible as a manual for life, when first thing most people do is chuck the manual away. And it looks like most things in TheocBase are self-explanatory to many users. but of course you will always get to that level where you need help.
So as for the manual, I couldn't say I entirely disagree, but I think it wouldn't be a definitive solution. You mention some brothers you work with that mess things up, because they don't wait for you. I am tempted to think they wouldn't read a manual either.
Yeah the idea is (my idea is...) that you shouldn't be aware of the database and be able to fix everything from the TB UI. It is a bit frustrating that this does not always work. Though it often also does...
I thought the backup function was fixed. (I am not sure about the export/import function though.)
If you have specific things that you need help with, we could arrange a Teamviewer session some day.
As it turns out I was able to open the document. I followed the instructions, however the song titles still do not appear on the mobile version of TheocBase. I am not sure if they are supposed to appear on the PDF/Printed Schedule either. I am running iPadOS 13.5.1 and TheocBase Version 2020.06.0.
I do have 4 other brothers that have TheocBase on their computers, would I need them to input that text into their copies of TheocBase? Also, do all of the brothers need to have TheocBase up to date on all of their computers and devices that share the same Syncfile for the songs to work on mobile devices? Just curious. As mentioned before, the songs do show up on my Mac and Windows Computer. Thank you for trying to help thus far.
I get back to you later today.
Song titles were already visible on the PDF if you tick that box under Additional Options in Printing. What is new is that they are now also visible in the UI.
I am not sure, if the other brothers need to do the same thing, actually...
What the txt file does, most fields in hte database have a time stamp. It sets the time stamp for every individual song to right now. So the idea is that when your mobile 'sees' that, it thinks 'oh, there is recent info, let's update this'.
Shall we do a Teamviewer session one of these days?
